PAPEN Picnic

Eleventh Annual

PAPEN Picnic
and
Networking Event

Saturday, September 11, 2010
12:00 Noon - 5:00 PM

Schenley Park
Anderson Shelter

(A brief business meeting will occur.)

Anderson Shelter is adjacent to Anderson Playground, one of Schenley Park’s nicest facilities. The playground is a highly visible collection of swings and slides for kids, and is a well-kept, safe area with little or no through traffic. There is abundant parking very close to the shelter, and there are water fountains and portable toilets suitable for a large number of people. The shelter has four large picnic tables and a large newly constructed barbecue grill. There is also a large meadow for games or general enjoyment.

The shelter is adjacent to an entrance of the park’s Pedestrian Recreation Trail, and is a short walk over the Panther Hollow Bridge from Phipps Conservatory. All in all, we have a beautiful spot for a picnic, with abundant close-in parking, and other attractions just a stone’s throw away.

If you are planning on attending the picnic on September 11th, please provide your name below. You do not need to sign-up in order to attend. This will help us estimate attendance.

DIRECTIONS TO ANDERSON SHELTER

Anderson Shelter is in Schenley Park, in Pittsburgh’s Oakland section. It is best reached from the Boulevard of the Allies. It can also be reached from Squirrel Hill or from the university section of Oakland.

From the Boulevard of the Allies

Stay in the right lane as you cross a long bridge where you can see the Cathedral of Learning on your left (as you come to the end of the bridge, you can also see Phipps Conservatory to your left).

Soon after the bridge, you will see Anderson Playground on your left, but you have to make a right to get there. You want to take the second right after the bridge, onto a small, hard to see park road. Do not take the first right after the bridge. This road has a sign pointing to the Pool and Picnic Areas.

The second right (the one you want) is hard to see until you’re on top of it, but it has a sign pointing to Phipps Conservatory, Flagstaff Hill, and Oakland.

Take that road, bearing right until you come to the newly renovated Panther Hollow Bridge. You will see Anderson Playground on your left, immediately before the entrance to the bridge.

Turn left, and you’ll see Anderson Shelter on your left, about 100 feet past the playground.

Park along the roadway and come up to the shelter (the roadway is a cul-de-sac with a turnaround at the end, and it has over a hundred parking spots. Parking is not a problem).

From Squirrel Hill

Follow Panther Hollow Road through Schenley Park. Bear right at the sign to Phipps Conservatory, Flagstaff Hill, and Oakland. When you come to the Panther Hollow Bridge, do not turn right onto the bridge. Go straight, and you’ll be at Anderson Playground.

From the University Area in Oakland

Follow Schenley Drive into the park, and continue to Phipps Conservatory. Immediately past the Conservatory grounds, bear right at a sign pointing to the Schenley Oval and Pool. Cross the Panther Hollow Bridge, making a hard right immediately at its end. Do not follow the sign pointing to Downtown and Boulevard of the Allies.
